My first reaction to this years draft: WHY? Why trade the pick? Why not draft Mendenhall? Why do you want a 6th round pick?
Why the hell use any pick on a QB? And why didn't Spencer Tillman get an edge up before going on the air for the 2008 Texans
Draft Special?
After trying to rationalize the picks in my own head, I suddenly realized that it wasn't Charlie Casseroley running this years
war room and Tony Bosselli, Jr. wasn't the first pick. I felt comfortable in trusting the Texans brain-trust for the second
consecutive year. After I heard news of the pick being traded, I kind of knew that they would probably draft Duane Brown.
As I was leaving work, I walked through the break room and found a co-worker watching the draft. We traded opinions and ideas
like a couple of Mel Kiper clones and on my way out of the door I said, "The Texans are probably going to draft Duane Brown,
an offensive tackle from I don't know what school." He replied, "Who the hell is that?" And I said, "Just remember the name."
My co-worker is probably the only person that will affirm my story and he might think I'm a genius, but I don't think that
highly of myself. I'm just an average football guru that will probably own the Houston Rockets one day, but that itself is
a different article (and website). Now, back to the draft. Duane Brown is a solid pick. We needed o-line help, and with
the addition of Chris Myers and Charles Spencer possibly coming back, the offensive line might actually become a strength
of our football team. We need big, able bodies, and Duane Brown will provide that. Also, with the so-called biggest acquisition
of the off-season, Alex Gibbs, the o-line may just be really really good.
Our second round pick, Antwaun Molden, addressed another pressing need. He is being compared to Fred Bennett, only with straighter
teeth. That is a big bonus already. The 3rd round pick, Steve Slaton is a pick that I'm not so hot on (although my colleague
and fellow draft analyst Pat Moss believes Slaton will be one the draft day steals). He is a small back, like Darius Walker,
and we already have about sixteen running backs on the roster. I am going to wish highly and hope that he supplants one
of the older injured backs. Since I am feeling positive today, I am going to support the pick with the idea that you can
never have enough running backs. The fourth rounder, Xavier Adibi, I like. At first I thought, "Damn, we just signed two
other linebackers, and Zac "Croc-O" Diles is going to contribute on something other than special teams and the Reliant Stadium
Landscaping Team," but then I realized that another linebacker can help DeMeco and Greenwood stay more fresh. The tape on
Adibi looks promising too. He played against good talent and held his own. I don't buy the "under-sized" knock at all because
we all know who else was passed on for being an "under-sized" LB too.
The Texans rounded out the draft with a few reaching picks. They drafted a DT, Frank Okam who is being knocked for wanting
to get an education and have a life outside of football. It's kind of funny that his motor, drive, and passion are questioned
because he took the LSAT and wants to have the option of being a lawyer if football doesn't work out. He gets my seal of
approval for being an educated athlete instead of an uneducated scumbag like one of the Cowboys recent additions. Before
this article goes on a tangent and addresses the needs of our society, education, and the atrocities happening across the
world, I would like introduce Dominique Barber, starting safty for the Houston Texans. If his bloodline is pure and he wasn't
adopted by the Barber's from the Matt Stevens household, he should be starting a few weeks into the season. Last but least,
QB Alex Brink was drafted as Gary Kubiak's new project. One scouting report claims that Brink can "can freeze linebackers
with fakes." With the Texans however, he will either be bagging and "freezing" the left-overs from the cafeteria or he will
be "faking" his death to receive his draft day insurance compensation.
All in all, I think the Texans had a pretty good day at the draft. They addressed needs and brought in solid players. Now
the attention will shift to signing undrafted players and possibly some other veterans. I think that the most obvious issue
will be to find a replacement for Anthony Weaver. He should be a camp casualty and looking for employment at RocBar before
the season. We need another end opposite Mario that is actually heard from during a game. Also, preliminary searching for
a defensive coordinator should also begin soon because Richard Smith is not the answer. Keep an eye out for that one.
Since the Rockets season is all but done, down 3-1 to the dirty Jazz, I can't wait for football to start. I'm counting down
the days to training camp and Pre-season. Tune back for more insight as we get closer to Sunday September 7th.
